While cataloging material in the library of the monastery of Mar Saba in 1958, Morton Smith discovered a quotation from a letter of Clement of Alexandria copied in the end pages of a 17th century collection of the letters of Ignatius. After more than a decade of collaborative analysis of the find, Smith published his conclusions in 1973, setting off a firestorm of controversy in the New Testament studies guild.
In 1975, a Jesuit scholar, Quentin Quesnell, claimed the letter had been forged and implied that Smith was the forger, moving the focus of debate off the text itself and onto Smith. Since then the pages containing the letter have been removed from the book and possibly destroyed, while Catholic and evangelical writers, none of whom have ever seen the pages in question, continue to claim that Smith forged the letter.
Following his death in 1991, accusations against Smith took on a considerably more personal tone, highlighting his alleged homosexuality and by implication his dishonesty and moral perversity. Although the question of authenticity remains unresolved, the controversy has opened a window on the intellectually corrupt nature of apologetic New Testament studies, a subject of greater importance than the authenticity of early Christian texts.

I read Morton Smith‘s book, ‘Jesus the Magician.’ I found it very interesting and insightful. I decided to read about Morton Smith and the controversy surrounding his discovery of the Secret Gospel of Mark. I’m glad I found this book. It does a good job of debunking the critics. It has confirmed in my mind that Smith was onto something, and the church/Christianity would prefer to ignore it.Product details

Secret Gospel of Mark morton smith clement of alexandria and four decades of academic burlesque edition by Robert Conner Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
In seven short chapters and 150 pages Conner sketches the circumstances of Smith's discovery, provides his own translation of the Clement letter, critiques Smith's interpretation, describes the initial response of the New Testament studies guild, savages the "ultracrepidarians" Carlson and Jeffery, argues convincingly for an alternative interpretation of the letter, and takes a few well-placed shots at evangelical scholars such as Craig Evans. Conner regards the Clement letter and Marcan fragments it contains as almost certainly genuine.
Smith's baptismal interpretation and his conjectured rite of homosexual initiation are rejected. Carlson's claims, particularly his evidence for forgery, are dismissed with contempt. Musicologist Peter Jeffery, "an authority on religious chanting," fares even worse; Jeffery's work is derided as "a despicable airy-fairy, artsy-fartsy, obscenely ignorant fantasy in the form of a contemptible book." In particular Conner nails the homophobia posthumously directed against Smith and does so in a manner that is simultaneously scathing and darkly amusing.
Conner cites a wealth of relevant material, including a recent article on statistical analysis of text. His alternate interpretation is well supported by textual evidence and by similar observations published in the professional literature. However I doubt this work will receive academic acclaim or even be reviewed by the professional journals. Conner believes the pages containing the letter of Clement have very likely been destroyed, in part due to the reaction of academics to Smith's homoerotic interpretation. Even though it is tightly argued and written with a dark sense of humor, this is not a reassuring book, nor is it comfortable to read. According to Conner the Secret Mark debate has been "encumbered nearly from the start by specious claims, misinformation, silly arguments, and gay bashing." Although Conner clearly regards Smith's interpretation as flawed, he equally clearly regards most New Testament scholars who have weighed in on the subject as agenda-driven incompetents.
Anyone with the least interest in the Secret Gospel of Mark should by all means read this book.
A very thorough overview of a still much debated topic. The author has clearly done his research. It will be hard for evangelicals to ignore the effort put into this book.
An eloquent and at times sarcastic demolition of the detractors of Morton Smith and his discovery of the Clement of Alexandria letter at Mar Saba.
I thought the secret gospel was great curiosity led me to this book and I was not disappointed
It makes one think that things in the gospels are just not plausible but the book put all this to rest very interesting indeed
